How To Make A Pattern Repeat Tile By Hand
I am very passionate about pattern design and, although I love the tools new technology has given us, such as the iPad and drawing tablets, I love to start my patterns the good old fashioned way: pencil and paper!
Recently I have been experimenting with a technique to create my pattern tiles entirely by hand before digitizing them in Adobe Illustrator and I absolutely love it!
In this class you will learn how to draw a pattern tile by hand and a little trick to disguise your repeat.
I will show you my process step by step, from preparing the paper to draw on; to drawing the motifs; to transferring them in Adobe Illustrator; and finally how to make the repeat.
I will also show you how to transform your square repeat tile into a half drop!
At the end of the class you will have a new pattern to include in your portfolio or to upload on a POD site like Spoonflower.
This course is for you if you want to learn a new skill, if you love and prefer to draw your patterns by hand (at least at the initial stage), and if you want to explore your style even more.
Prerequisites:
- This is an intermediate course and you will need to have a basic knowledge of the essential tools of Adobe Illustrator because that’s the program we will use to finish the pattern tile and create the final digital repeat.

For this class you will need:
- Paper
- Pencil
- Cutting Knife
- Ruler + Triangular Ruler
- Cutting Mat
- Low Tack Tape or Washi Tape
- Also advisable to have is a drawing tablet
- Adobe Illustrator
